MP-Maustepalvelu Oy develops, produces and sells various kinds of spice mixtures for the food industry. Located in Hämeenlinna, MP-Maustepalvelu stocks over 400 ingredients and has a worldwide network of ingredient suppliers, plus its own product development and testing facilities. MP-Maustepalvelu has over 1,000 products.
Traceability of origin and quality assurance is vital in the food industry, where regulations just keep getting tighter. In recent years, EU-level regulations have become stricter, for example on product content labelling. Listing of nutritional values and warnings against possibly allergenic substances are now common.
When the old MP-Maustepalvelu ERP system reached its end of the road, the company decided on a comprehensive and advanced ERP system. It had to meet the legal, production, and productivity requirements. MP-Maustepalvelu also wanted the batch tracking to be flawless from the very beginning.
Construction of an ERP system, based on the Digia Enterprise solution, began in 2002. The system started up in early 2003. After implementing basic features such as ERP, financial management and stock control, MP-Maustepalvelu and Digia have continued to work closely together in developing the system.
In production and financial administration, the system’s cost calculation features help optimize the ingredient mix. For example, if the price of an ingredient changes, the mix changes too. If the price of a single ingredient rises or lowers, the pricing feature automatically gives the end product’s new price. The system also automatically produces a product data form. This gives the product’s specific ingredients, energy content, salt content and microbiological data.
Batch tracking is a good example of a feature that surpasses regulative requirements. Detailed information is available on every batch of ingredients in products shipped to customers, even if several batches of the same ingredients were used. Advanced batch tracking and self-monitoring provide information on the ingredient batch used for each product consignment.
Batch tracking is done in real time, with the handheld terminals used for collection. With these, the codes are read in ingredient batches collected from storage. This means that information on the stock balance is also available in real time. It also eliminates the possibility of human error when logging the batch code. Handheld terminals and software provided by Digia have been used for batch tracking since 2006.
Quality control software has been developed for recording sample data from each incoming ingredient batch. This ensures the data’s availability for later laboratory analysis.
In addition to production, handheld terminals are also used in dispatch operations. The used ingredients and remote data can be reliably individualized by reading the code, which improves the carrying out of processes. The storage uses Kardex’s automated storage system, which has been integrated to the ERP system by using Digia’s real-time integration solution.
Over the years, Digia’s ERP solution has effortlessly processed everything, from bolts and components, to spice kilos and grams.
“This advanced system has made our daily production far more efficient. We also need to know that we have a reliable system, in case of unusual situations such as product callbacks”, explains MP-Maustepalvelu’s CIO Jarno Kääpä.
Long customer relationship has taught Digia to understand the customer’s wishes thoroughly. Partnership has also improved Digia’s food industry expertise.
