In Senior Trainee -blog series we get a sneak peak of everyday life at Digia and Digians career stories. In this blog Software Developer Lendl Gomes tells us how he ended up working at Digia and what does the "Senior Trainee" culture mean to him.

"Before I started working at Digia, I was primarily working as a Java Developer for 4 years in IT company. I was looking for something new to do, for a new challenge, something out of my comfort zone and so I started looking up for new job opportunities on LinkedIn. That’s when I saw that Digia was looking for Integration and API developers to join their team and work on very interesting project while using the latest technologies. So I decided to apply for that position.

My first project was an IoT project and it was for a Future City Challenge competition Digia was participating in. IoT was totally new for me but I wanted to learn. We built a Green Biking solution which combines sensors measuring air quality with city bikes. We ended up winning the competition. So I had great start at Digia. Since then I have been working on APIs and API Management for various customers using different technologies. Recently I have moved into Integration team and am providing integration solutions for customers using Azure cloud services.

I have so far used an array of technologies here at Digia. From WSO2 APIM, Docker and AWS cloud services like EC2, ECS, EFS, ECR etc to Google cloud APIGee. Currently after moving into the Integrations team I am working with various Azure Cloud services like Azure APIM, Azure functions, Logic Apps etc.

Even though I am fairly new to the Integration field, I have already seen quite a few changes, so along with new technologies and architecture and requirements I do expect the field keeps changing and evolving continuously.

At Digia, working here is being responsible for your own work and having the backing of your team and superiors to know that they trust you and your skill. You get to implement solutions and work on different new technologies with freedom and suggestions/improvements are always welcome. You also can invest time in learning new technologies and getting certified which is nice and helpful. Also there is a lot of flexibility regarding working hours and also remote working. Basically, a lot of things an employee would like and want. And lastly not to forget to mention the friendly colleagues.

I would say the flexibility, freedom, and independence that I have here are the things I like about Digia. Being able to have the freedom to learn and explore and try new technologies and also at the same time being flexible with working hours and place of work and all that mixed with being independent to carry out your tasks in a responsible manner is just lovely.

My colleagues are always helpful in teaching and helping me learn new solutions or technologies. Whenever I am stuck I know they are there to help and that is really assuring. Also, I do like the idea of learning from everyone because when you learn, you grow and even when you may be sharing your knowledge you always end up learning a bit more than you knew before. After all sharing is caring. Learning is important to me, to grow and get better, to improve my skills and knowledge and stay up to date with the ever involving IT industry we work in, and so I make full use of the trainings and opportunities Digia presents to learn whatever interests me.

In a few years I would like to see myself as a Cloud and Integration Architect which includes being a more integral part of customer discussions and project requirements where I could share my expertise to others."
