A mobile app that changed the whole company

A mobile application designed to facilitate labour hire led to the rebranding of the whole company.

Briko Oy, a company specialising in labour hire for the construction industry, wanted to revolutionise the industry with a mobile application that would make it easier for employees and employers to find each other. Following the success of the Bolt application, Briko rebranded itself as Bolt.Works Oy, challenging competitors with its unique solution: Bolt.Works makes labour hire in the construction industry mobile. Together with Bolt’s in-house technical team, Digia was responsible for the technical implementation of the application based on a new type of technology and concept.

Revolutionising labour hire

The idea of managing construction labour hire in an unconventional manner had been brewing at Briko for a long time. The company felt new technology to be a vital part of Briko, which is why the company wanted to transfer its service concept to a mobile app. In the autumn of 2016, the company hired new CTO Ville Herva. One of the new CTO’s duties was to make the idea of the company’s digitalisation a reality.

In September 2016, the application had got to a point where the outline of the concept was complete. Only one vital stage was missing: the technical implementation. At this point, Briko contacted a few software companies, and Digia was picked as the winner. Briko saw that Digia had top, state-of-the-art expertise in new hybrid application technologies – especially of React Native after the recently implemented Frank project. In addition, both parties had great confidence that the project could be completed professionally despite the tight schedule.

A fast-paced sector requires a fast-paced implementation team

The objective of the project was bold and ambitious: to revolutionise labour hire in the construction sector by bringing all aspects of the employment contract and operations to your mobile – work, orders, contracts, hour cards, addresses and contact persons. In the fast-paced construction industry, round-the-clock service is a fantastic benefit. Orders can be confirmed in just a few minutes, with no middlemen, and the men can be at the site in a matter of hours. Digia decided that a hybrid app was the best way to implement the application.

The project team consisted of an application architect and two senior developers from Digia, along with Ville Herva, a developer recently hired by Briko and one outsourced user interface designer. The project was implemented with the agile development model, which enables fast iterations and pivoting. The most important thing was to recognise that, if one idea does not work, it can be quickly exchanged for another.

The schedule was tight, but modern development tools enabled the rapid completion of the application. The app was built on React Native and AWS Lambda (Node.js), and the beta was ready for testing by Bolt’s customers by the end of the year. It was vital that the application would work flawlessly from the beginning, so it was tested and iterated by end users for three months before launch. In this way, we were able to make the application exactly as the customer wanted it.

The idea of managing construction labour hire in an unconventional manner had been brewing at Briko for a long time.

A mobile application revolutionised practices

The Bolt mobile application was released on 3 April 2017. The mobile application played a major role in how the entire company found a new way to operate and think about labour hire – resulting in a name change to Bolt.Works.

“The project was challenging and the technology new, but everything went smoothly thanks to our expert developers. It feels great that people were so satisfied with our application that they took the leap and rebranded their whole company around it. As a company, one of our greatest strengths is being pioneers in many new technologies and having the courage to apply them. In the future, we want to keep conquering new territory with bold companies like Bolt.Works”, says Director of Customised Services Niklas Lahti of Digia.
