Case DB Schenker

Visual and easy to use forwarding system

In the early 2000, DB Schenker needed a forwarding system which would fulfil the requirements of customs officials, and could be integrated into the company’s international main systems. As the solution, DB Schenker chose Digia Logistics, which was integrated into DB Schenker’s other IT systems bi-directionally, allowing for the real-time data transfer both within the solution and between background applications.

Digia Logistics family of products fulfilled DB Schenker’s needs of a forwarding system that would meet the requirements of customs officials.

DB Schenker’s partnership with Digia began already in 2001 when DB Schenker adopted modules from the Digia Logistics family of products. The company needed a forwarding system which would fulfil all the existing and upcoming requirements of customs officials, and could be integrated into the company’s international main systems. The two companies have been developing the system together since the beginning of partnership.

Real time data transfer within the solution and between background applications

From the Digia Logistics family of products, DB Schenker first adopted Digia ProSped. Digia ProSped is a solution developed for forwarding agencies, which fulfils all the requirements of the Finnish customs authorities, whether it be in relation to form submission or electronic data transfer. Digia and DB Schenker were among the first companies in Finland to pilot the new procedures put in place by Finnish Customs.

ProSped includes ITU customs clearance of imports, the ELEX process for exports, statistical import and export reports as EDI messages, the NCTS machine-readable transit system, AREX declarations and entry summary declarations. Additionally, messages are sent to Customs in XML using Digia’s direct communications module, which also makes use of the Customs message transmission service.

Later the system was expanded with the ProTerminal module. ProTerminal is an operational information system for terminal services, which DB Schenker linked to the transport system it uses globally. The system is used to manage the unloading and temporary storage of goods subject to customs duty, as effortlessly as possible and fulfilling all the requirements set by Customs.

Special attention has been paid to the solution’s ease of use.

Smooth cooperation and visual usability

The Digia Logistics system is integrated into DB Schenker’s other IT systems. Special attention has been paid to the solution’s ease of use. A visual user interface makes the system simple to use; for example, mass saving can be completed easily without using a mouse. Form printouts are available in both traditional matrix form and as laser printouts with the form template, which can be saved in PDF format for emailing when necessary.

“Our long-term collaboration means project start-up is flexilbe and progress is smooth”, says Customs Specialist Ville Raevuori from DB Schenker.

“Digia is well versed in its products and development tools, and is able to take into account the challenges we face in our operations. We are very happy with the ease of use of Digia’s solutions and the competence of the company’s personnel.”

Deep level of cooperation has enabled efficient deliveries and quick reactions to the changing needs of DB Schenker’s business operations.

“Our cooperation has always been smooth, and our mutual trust ensures that it will remain so in the future”, says Digia Sales Manager Tapio Sulkko.
