Getting more out of enterprise resource planning with a Business Intelligence solution

Huntteri wanted to switch from manual reporting on spreadsheets to a more efficient solution. Digia provided Huntteri with a Business Intelligence solution that boosted the efficiency of the company’s reporting and freed up time for more important things, such as developing sales work.

Oy Huntteri Ab, a growing importer of sports goods based in Turku, needed a more versatile reporting solution to support its business. The company has used the BI4Dynamics solution built for the Microsoft Dynamics NAV enterprise resource planning system since summer 2010.

“We wanted to output reports from our existing database to support the monitoring of sales and sourcing in a rapid and flexible way. One of the special requirements we have in our business is managing pre-orders. Retailers order products such as bicycles from us in advance, and delivery takes place much later on,” says Juho Huttunen, Product Manager at Huntteri Oy.

The BI4Dynamics solution was favoured for its inexpensive pricing and good compatibility with the rest of the Microsoft family.

“This was the most competitive alternative. Flexibility was important to us, and the solution also addresses our sales and inventory management needs. It is built for NAV, and we were able to deploy it with only minor changes. The software works on top of Excel, so there is no need to install anything else or worry about separate updates,” Huttunen says.

Huntteri can now obtain the information it needs to support sales and inventory management from its database with the click of a mouse button, and it is able to react to changing circumstances immediately.

“By far the biggest benefit is the incredible saving of time now that we can access reports from our computers whenever we need them. The most recent events can then be analysed straight away.”

More time for sales

Before Huntteri deployed its BI solution, it assembled reports manually from separate printouts using Excel. Ready-made templates are now made for the most important reports, and updates can now be output with the click of a mouse button. The most important reports are used to monitor sales per customer, salesperson, product group and product.

“By far the biggest measurable benefit is the incredible saving of time now that we can access reports from our computers whenever we need them. If we give some thought to which reports we need and save ready-made report templates, the most recent events can be output for analysis immediately. The solution is relatively simple to use and the need for training is minimal,” Huttunen states.

Huntteri uses the time it saves for purposes such as developing sales work.

“Everyone can now focus on their own jobs. Sales work is more efficient when we are better able to monitor sales trends. For example, we used to make reports on pre-orders less often, but now we can react to various circumstances immediately,” says Huttunen.

Up-to-date analysis from the enterprise resource planning system

The challenge that Huntteri is facing down is familiar to many companies: managing a large volume of data and analysing it efficiently. The BI4Dynamics solution was implemented into Huntteri’s enterprise resource planning system by Digia, which also supplied the ERP system.

Data analysis and refinement is conducted with the help of cubing. During the night, an analysis database is run from the enterprise resource planning system using specified rules and calculations are performed to provide quick access to information describing important trends and changes.

Next, Huntteri intends to expand the use of the BI4 solution to the organisation’s other functions. The plans include developing the reporting of the warehouse and purchasing function. Financial management reports will follow in the phase after that.

“The BI system needs to be asked the right questions. Everyone’s own business determines the most important reports. For us, this solution still holds great potential. It has already enabled existing data to be utilised extremely effectively,” summarises Juho Huttunen.
