Faster logistics with Digia's ProSped solution
Digia and Keslog, which handles the Kesko Group's logistics, have worked together for years. Their major joint project has been the modernisation of Keslog's customs clearance and forwarding system and its integration into the Group's systems.
“We had a growing need to develop our delivery monitoring. Our existing systems were no longer up to the task,” says Outi Liukkonen, Logistics Planner at Keslog, who headed up the project.
Another major reason for the reform was the start-up of exports to Russia in 2012 and the new system requirements this ushered in. The old system was nearing the end of its life cycle and the company needed entirely new functionalities to handle exports to Russia.
“We wanted to ensure that we have a unified end-to-end system,” adds Tanja Lilja, System Specialist at Ruokakesko. Keslog is a subsidiary of Ruokakesko, which is responsible for Keslog's information systems.
The requirements set for the new system were control of the big picture, a high degree of automation and good readiness for integration into other systems.

Keslog relied on an ordinary tendering process to choose its partner. In the end, there were no significant differences between the systems on offer, so the company consulted its partners.

Digia's ProSped customs clearance and forwarding system included everything the company needed. Keslog and Digia carried out a Proof of Concept phase, which clinched the deal.
“Digia's system featured complete customs EDI, which was a major advantage. There was no need to set up customs messaging separately,” says Liukkonen.
Integration plays an important role
Systems integration plays a major role in logistics. It enables not only seamless information transfer within the Kesko Group, but also the transfer of data to and from subcontractors.
Accordingly, the most important further development projects concern stepping up automation in electronic information transfer both within the Group and to its partners. This involves implementing integrations and making better use of existing interfaces.
“We're proactively seeking to make broader use of existing interface solutions,” says Lilja.
Keslog and Digia are continuing to work closely together, even though the original project has been wrapped up. Further development is carried out regularly. Liukkonen is satisfied with how Digia has handled their cooperation. The companies have worked together to appoint an effective team.
“Digia's key employees understand logistics and our field of business. They also have experts specialising in customs clearance issues,” says Liukkonen.
To ensure effective cooperation, Digia employees must have special expertise in logistics, but specialist competence in business functions in Kesko's industry also plays a great role. Keslog praises Digia for how it has handled these matters.
