Efficient product information management supports multi-channel sales
Puuilo adopted a new product information management solution in connection with an ICT strategy update. Digia was chosen for the implementation due to our solid base of experience.
Puuilo, which had experienced significant growth driven by the ”smart shopping” phenomenon emphasising affordable products, found the need to update its ICT strategy, and the process was begun in the summer of 2015. The cornerstones of the strategy were centralised product information management (PIM) and enterprise resource planning (ERP).
Digia was chosen as the company’s partner for the implementation of PIM. According to Puuilo’s CIO Esa Haapa-Aho, the goal of the project was to improve the accuracy of Puuilo’s core business information and facilitate the maintenance of accurate information in all sales channels, i.e. the online shop, print media and shops.
“Growth in online sales, for example, can only be achieved with efficient product information management and accurate stock amounts”, Haapa-aho says.
Functioning product information management improves business efficiency
An open-source Akeneo PIM solution was chosen as the product information management platform.
“Large-scale retail projects have been implemented with Akeneo in Finland and abroad. Digia’s extensive experience in the retail sector also tipped the scales in their favour”, Haapa-aho says.
“Akeneo is a fantastic solution for Puuilo due to its cost-effectiveness, scalability, modern technology and customisability. PIM is worth investing in, because it can be used to improve business efficiency, manage all product information in a centralised manner and put products on sale faster”, says Jouni Wahalahti, responsible for the project at Digia.
Matias Rask, in charge of the project’s technical implementation at Digia, says that the Akeneo architecture is easy to modify:
“Customising the system to the customer’s needs was quick and easy thanks to its modifiability. Akeneo is built around the Symfony2 software framework, so integration with other systems was not a problem either.”
The goal of the project was to improve the accuracy of Puuilo’s core business information.
Systems easy to update and replace
Akeneo was integrated with the open-source Odoo ERP delivered by Sprintit Oy and the ePages online shop of Vilkas Oy. Crafhouse’s upgraded cloud-based system was used as the point-of-sale system. Reporting was implemented into Qlikview, already in use by the company, together with Evolvit & Staria. The other software solutions were already in use by Puuilo, and the company was happy with them.
Since the overall solution consists of both new and existing systems, it was possible to implement the entire project agilely and in stages instead of a single, massive deployment. The first phase was in the bag in just eight weeks from the first workshop.
The chosen IT architecture consists of several systems, each with its own strengths and, if necessary, life span. Individual systems are thus easy to update or even replace. All of the solution’s systems share a cost-effective and modern cloud-based architecture and user interface.
