Case Valio

Atlas – up-to-date monitoring of sales and profitability

Finnish food company Valio wanted to harmonise its processes for generating profitability data to ensure that up-to-date information was available to the organisation. Digia provided Valio with the Atlas system, which frees up the finance organisation’s time to focus on analysis rather than data generation.

Atlas has increased the confidence in figures and the understanding of the causal relationships of accounting. Atlas is our most important reporting tool and the basis of almost all of our executive reporting. Thanks to Atlas, up-to-date profitability data is always available to the people who require it and the finance organisation no longer needs to generate this data separately. This means that we have more time to concentrate on analysing the data.

Atlas – up-to-date monitoring of sales and profitability

Atlas consolidates data from different sources, providing up-to-date profitability information that is easily accessible to everyone who needs it. The system enables better decision-making at Valio.

Previously, Valio’s finance department generated profitability data under a separate assignment. Valio found it necessary to harmonise the processes for generating profitability data (data collection, accounting, reporting) to ensure that the entire organisation has access to up-to-date information.

Digia provided Valio with a system that consolidates data from various sources and enables a diverse overview of the factors explaining sales, profitability and costs.

The system increases understanding and improves decision-making

Profitability can be analysed for each product, customer and factory using various groupings and filters via either standard reports or separate analyses. Changes to the organisation, production plants, groupings and accounting models can be implemented on the system flexibly.

“Atlas has increased the confidence in figures and the understanding of the causal relationships of accounting. Atlas is our most important reporting tool and the basis of almost all of our executive reporting. Thanks to Atlas, up-to-date profitability data is always available to the people who require it and the finance organisation no longer needs to generate this data separately. This means that we have more time to concentrate on analysing the data,” says Osmi Hämäläinen, Valio’s CFO.

The Atlas system based on SAS technology was deployed at Valio in 2011. The system was provided by Digia and is still covered by maintenance and production support.

The use of profitability data as a part of all decision-making processes at Valio has increased significantly. The system is used by more than 300 people in different parts of the company.

Since the deployment of the Atlas system, Digia has continued to work with Valio on matters such as data analytics and data-oriented management projects.
