Digia has signed the Women’s Empowerment Principles or WEPs. The WEPs are seven principles developed by the UN’s gender equality organization UN Women and the UN Global Compact, which provide guidance and means for companies to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment in the workplace, market, and community. At the moment 21 other companies in Finland have signed the principles and initiative.

The seven Women’s Empowerment Principles are:

  1. The company’s top management should set equality and women’s empowerment as the highest strategic goal.
  2. All women and men in the workplace should be treated fairly and without discrimination.
  3. The health, well-being, and safety of employees should be a priority, and there should be zero tolerance for sexual harassment and violence.
  4. Compliance with company practices should be ensured, and women’s professional advancement should be supported with training.
  5. Supply chains should be inclusive, and equality should also be promoted in marketing and advertising.
  6. Companies should take initiatives to develop communities and promote gender equality and women’s empowerment.
  7. Achievements and progress should be monitored with measurement and reporting practices.

Digia’s CEO Timo Levoranta, who signed the WEPs, states, “At Digia, we are committed to gender equality. It’s about equality and also business success. A diverse and inclusive work community is the key to the company’s sustainable success. That’s why we want to encourage women in the technology sector to move forward and generally strengthen diversity at Digia.”

Members from Digia’s equality and non-discrimination group completed the UN Global Compact Network Finland’s Target Gender Equality training program, which ended in March 2024. The program focused specifically on promoting gender equality, diversity, inclusion, and equal pay. Digia’s performance level was assessed using the WEPs tool, identifying areas for development and strengths, and learning to set ambitious goals to advance equality work.

Liisa Onninen, who leads Digia’s equality and non-discrimination group, says, "The equality and non-discrimination plan for the current strategic period includes actions such as developing pay processes and pay data monitoring to support gender pay equality, inclusive recruitment measures, and piloting women’s networking activities. Commitment to the WEPs is a natural continuation of the equality work done, which will continue from here, one step at a time.”

At the end of 2023, 28.5% of Digia’s employees identified as women, and the company is committed to creating a community where everyone can feel accepted and be themselves.
