At the start of the playoffs, Digia's AI predicted Lukko and Ilves to battle for gold and KalPa and SaiPa for bronze. The pairs were correct, but the placements were reversed.
The AI's predictions are based on data from previous games, and as the season has brought one surprise after another, the AI has sometimes entirely gone off track.
However, when examined more closely, the AI's performance has been consistently strong despite the surprises.
AI Performs Consistently Without Emotional Interference
The AI's success rate for the entire season is currently 68%, meaning it has predicted about two-thirds of the games correctly. In the playoffs, the percentage is already 73%, or about three out of four games correctly.
It looks even better in betting: if one had placed a euro on each playoff game according to the AI's prediction, they would now be 27 euros ahead. Playing with the smallest odds from Veikkaus would have resulted in a six-euro loss at this stage.
According to Digia's Chief Technology Officer, Juhana Juppo, the numbers clearly show how AI can find the winner from a slightly larger group than a single game series. Therefore, these types of AI models are valuable for companies in making predictions.
"This shows how beautifully AI does its work with data and probabilities, undeterred by surprises, even though sometimes a human emotion comes into play: no one would have believed before the season how Raimo Helminen would get SaiPa, or should we say RaiPa, to soar. The impact of one person, Raipe, can already be considered statistically significant, not forgetting the excellently playing team," says Juppo.
However, the AI does not believe that SaiPa's rise will continue to the championship but predicts KalPa as the champion, whose position has steadily risen in the AI's forecast throughout the season.
Juppo describes how, in human thinking, individual things may be overemphasized or, on the other hand, completely overlooked. AI bases its predictions on facts. In business, AI can also help balance the overall picture and understand what should be considered in decisions and what weight should be given to them.
