Case Tana

New ERP supports company growth goals and process automation

The manufacture of complex machines for waste treatment and the development of intelligent devices for recycling place special demands on IT infrastructure. Digia built a new ERP system for the environmental technology company Tana, which enabled process automation and improved operational efficiency.

Tana is an environmental technology company that promotes sustainable development by providing smart devices and solutions for solid waste management, such as landfill compactors, shredders and wafer screens. However, Tana's strength lies in electronic control systems and intelligent recycling solutions. The company's business is based on data-driven business, continuously developed in customer cooperation.

"We have grown strongly in recent years, and it is important that the ERP system that guides our operations stays ahead of our growth and supports future operating models. Our old ERP system did not enable sufficient scalability and even limited our performance", says Tero Silvonen, CIO at Tana.

What we did

  • Scalable ERP system that enables process automation and improved operational efficiency

What we used

The project team consisted of competent people on Digia's side. However, the key to success was that we tried to come up with solutions and fine-tune things to make things smoother. This continuous development was important for Digia and our processes, and this helped us improve cooperation.

Scalable ERP helps in everyday life and enables growth

The company's need was clear: an ERP system that has reached the end of its life cycle must be replaced, while a solid foundation for future integrations must be created. The usability of ERP should also be improved.

"Our old ERP system only supported one type of machine design at a time. However, when we have several different products and configurations, the problem arises from how to model them in the system so that in all different situations, the structures can be brought into production mode at the right time. In addition, we needed to anticipate new and changed items coming through the change process, which should be made known to the procurement well in advance. This was one major limitation of our old system", Silvonen says.

"The new system allows us to use the same name in several different structures, which enables us to significantly change and fine-tune our operations and processes. Examples include assembly phases and configuring subassemblies to be performed in several different locations, with the system controlling material flows between locations", Silvonen continues.

Cooperation is the key to success – Digia's strengths are flexibility and continuous development

Digia and the NetSuite ERP system were chosen as partners thanks to a convincing presentation in the bidding phase. The presentation created a credible picture of how a new, scalable ERP system would support Tana's growth.

In December 2022, the old system was replaced with the modern browser-based Netsuite ERP system. The project proceeded smoothly from the start. In the analysis phase, Tana was provided with comprehensive pre-assignments, followed by a weekly workshop schedule. Through close cooperation, it was noticed that the project scope was wider than expected.

"We started the project with a flexible attitude, but with Digia's support and flexibility in terms of schedules, we got things rolling. Sprints and personal planning helped us stay on target, even though the planned schedule changed from the original. Digia was able to adapt to changing situations, and this flexibility played a significant role in the project's success", says Silvonen.

"Digia showed flexibility and adapted to our schedules. When we noticed that things turned out to be more difficult or we didn't have enough time, the schedules were adjusted accordingly", Silvonen continues.

"The project team included competent people on Digia's side. However, the key to success was that we tried to come up with solutions and fine-tune things to make things smoother. This continuous development was important for Digia and our processes, and this helped us improve our cooperation", Silvonen says.

The benefits of the new system are obvious – "It puts us in a strong position"

The implementation of the new ERP system brings significant benefits to Tana.

Integrations with other systems used by the company will improve, making operations more efficient and reducing manual work. Reporting possibilities are diversified, providing more accurate and up-to-date information to support decision-making. The performance of production processes also improves, speeding up delivery times and improving customer satisfaction.
Browser-based and automatic updates provide flexibility and ensure that the system is always up-to-date without any extra effort. This supports the company's growth goals and the digitalisation of processes.

In addition, the system offers other useful features, such as scalability, automation, and digitalization solutions using APIs. The company plans to develop system integration between different organizations and improve visibility in the supply chain, increasing transparency and efficiency in operations.

"We are excited about the new opportunities the new ERP system will bring. This puts us in a strong position for future growth," says Tero Silvonen.
