Digia and Traficom Sign €2 Million Agreement to Establish an AI Experimentation Office

Digia and Traficom have signed a significant agreement to develop a governance model for Traficom’s new AI Experimentation Office. The agreement also includes an option for further development and support services related to the planning and implementation of AI experiments. The contract's total value, including options, is €2 million over four years. The competitive tender attracted 16 bids, with Digia selected as the winner.

The new AI Experimentation Office aims to bring structure to the adoption of AI and streamline the transition from experimentation to production use within Traficom.

The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom aims to build a safe and functional society where people, goods, and data move securely. AI can support these goals in many ways.

“Traficom has previously conducted individual AI experiments, but the goal now is to standardize these efforts and create a systematic model for evaluation and implementation,” says Sari Örn, Head of Department at Traficom.

The AI Experimentation Office will help turn pilots into practice

Traficom sought a partner with a ready-made framework and productized approach to implementing an AI governance model. The new AI Experimentation Office will support the technical execution of experiments and their systematic evaluation.

In the future, when an idea for utilizing AI emerges within the organization, Traficom will have a clear operating model and criteria for selecting ideas for testing, executing the tests, and evaluating the outcomes.

What happens after the experiment is crucial. According to Andreas Strandman, Director of Data & Analytics at Digia, this is a pain point in many organizations.

“Many organizations conduct AI experiments, but the challenge is moving from experimentation to real-world application. To realize the true benefits of AI, successful pilots must be scaled into broader production use,” Strandman explains.

“We’ve seen with several clients that a systematic model like the AI Experimentation Office helps identify and launch AI ideas, and especially in scaling the results into everyday operations. We’re truly excited to now bring this approach to Traficom. When we succeed in integrating AI into the flow of traffic and information, the benefits will be felt in the daily lives of all citizens,” he adds.
