Winners of the AI Roadmap competition selected: YIT and the Finnish Olympic Committee are looking for new opportunities from AI with Digia

The winners of Digia’s Artificial Intelligence Roadmap competition were construction company YIT and the Finnish Olympic Committee. Through the competition, Digia wants to encourage organizations to utilize artificial intelligence. YIT sees opportunities in artificial intelligence for renewing the construction industry, and through the Olympic Committee, artificial intelligence can boost the entire Finnish sports and exercise community.

There is no point in waiting with artificial intelligence, as the biggest benefits are available from everyday use cases - in all organizations, already now. This is Digia’s message in the competition held at the end of last year, the prize of which is an artificial intelligence roadmap worth 10,000 euros.

The roadmap work helps organizations identify opportunities for utilizing artificial intelligence and outline steps for their implementation.

The prize was decided to be awarded to two winners. Among companies, the winner was construction company YIT. Among foundations and societal actors, the winner was the Finnish Olympic Committee.

YIT wants to create added value for the construction industry with artificial intelligence

According to construction company YIT, only a small slice of the possibilities of artificial intelligence has been utilized in the construction industry. The company’s goal is to be a pioneer in the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning and to improve efficiency throughout the industry. YIT expects the competition to lower the threshold for the use of artificial intelligence and increase interest in the subject more widely in the construction industry.

“As an industry, construction is networked and cyclical activity. The current, challenging economic situation and the sudden stop of construction, on the other hand, the duration of construction projects from zoning to the completion of sites, create an interesting and diverse decision-making field, where we see significant potential for hyperautomation and artificial intelligence. Application areas can be found from economic situation forecasting to construction site selection, marketing, production process and supply chain optimization,” describes Chief Technology Officer Juhana Juppo from Digia.

The construction industry has a significant impact on the Finnish national economy, for example from the perspective of employment.
“If we can bring efficiency to the construction industry by adding intelligence to processes, the effects can be felt in the national economy,” Juppo justifies YIT’s choice

Boost for the Finnish sports and exercise community with artificial intelligence

The Olympic Committee produces the Suomisport service for the entire sports community to facilitate the activities of sports federations and sports clubs and transactions in sports services. Over 800,000 users have already registered for Suomisport.

“In addition, we are responsible for the data strategy work of the Finnish sports community and the promotion of the Finnish sports and exercise data repository. We want to be a pioneer in digitalization in the Finnish sports and exercise community and therefore explore the possibilities of artificial intelligence and also proceed systematically and planned in this respect,” says Juha Saapunki from the Finnish Olympic Committee.

Digia’s jury estimates that the Olympic Committee has good readiness to utilize artificial intelligence: a lot of data has been collected and the readiness for basic level reporting and analytics exist.

“By developing the activities of the Finnish Olympic Committee, we also support the Finnish sports and exercise community as Digia,” Juppo justifies.

Artificial intelligence lessons for the benefit of all

The winners of the competition were two very different types of organizations. Therefore, different observations and discoveries related to the utilization of artificial intelligence are also expected. These observations and experiences can be followed during the beginning of the year on Digia’s channels.

In addition, Digia will publish a survey describing the utilization of artificial intelligence in Finnish organizations during the beginning of the year, which is compiled based on competition responses.

“Artificial intelligence and, in general, the opportunities of digitalization play a key role in the development of the entire Finnish business field and society in the coming years. There is no mystique associated with artificial intelligence, and there is no point in waiting, as the benefits are available from everyday use cases already now. Through experiments and first steps, those utilization targets are found where artificial intelligence brings the greatest value. We hope that the peer information we share will benefit every organization in planning their own artificial intelligence path,” says Juhana Juppo.
