Modern integration platform saves taxpayers' money

A modern integration platform to speed up development

DigiFinland decided to acquire a modern integration platform to speed up and simplify integration development. At the same time, they decided to establish their own in-house integration development team. In the public tendering process, the comprehensive solution proposed by Digia stood out.

Development Manager Arto Kvist describes Digia's approach as credible and convincing. "It quickly became clear that we were in good hands. Digia's integration team is highly skilled," Kvist says.

The new integration platform was implemented using open-source components, but with commercial support. The platform is based on Red Hat products and Google Cloud services. Comprehensive security audits and certifications were carried out on the completed platform.

Integration platform has brought in significant cost savings

Kvist explains that the centralized integration platform brough immediate speed, flexibility and cost savings to service development. "The integration platform has significantly reduced maintenance work. We have saved substantial amounts on integration costs."

The performance and response times of integrations have also improved, and they can now be managed and monitored centrally.

”Technically, the integration platform is extremely reliable. We have not had a single significant downtime or security breach, which tells about Digia's professionalism," Kvist summarizes.

Dozens of legacy IT systems successfully decommissioned

When analyzing the needs of the wellbeing services counties, it became apparent that they possessed a massive number of IT systems and databases that were no longer in use. However, legislation requires that data from these legacy systems must be preserved.

Digia implemented an Electronic archiving solution for DigiFinland. A software robot automatically extracts data from legacy systems, performs the necessary conversions, and transfers the information via the new integration platform to Kela's national Kanta archive.

Over 10 million documents have already been transferred this way. Consequently, Robotic Process Automation (RPA) robots are among the largest users of the integration platform.

As a result, dozens of legacy IT systems have been shut down across Finland. Ending their maintenance has brought significant cost savings.

The collaboration between DigiFinland and Digia has lasted five years so far, and Kvist notes that DigiFinland remains highly satisfied with the co-created solutions and the smooth cooperation.

”It has always been a pleasure to work with Digia. The costs are also highly predictable, and there have been no surprises," Kvist says.

In the future, DigiFinland aims to expand the use of the integration platform within the wellbeing services counties. They can implement their own integrations on DigiFinland's platform without making their own infrastructure investments, which is expected to bring significant savings to the counties as well.
