Fingrid

Strategic partnership driving real-time, data-driven operations

The electricity system is undergoing a significant transformation, in which data has become a critical asset for society as a whole. Fingrid has responded to this shift by modernising its technologies and operating models with determination. The modern data platform built together with Digia now delivers new levels of data capability and provides a solid backbone for data-driven decision-making.

Read summary (generated by AI, checked by a human)

  • Fingrid is modernizing its data platform to meet the growing data demands of the real-time energy market.

  • A strategic partnership with Digia enabled a comprehensive technology and operating model renewal.

  • The new model improved data freshness, reliability, and usability, accelerating development and strengthening business decision-making.

  • Continuous development and AI-driven forecasting models guide the following steps to secure the future of the electricity system.

Fingrid and Digia share a common vision and a joint responsibility for the future. Fingrid operates at the core of the energy sector, where changes in the electricity system, digitalisation, and the geopolitical environment must be anticipated. According to Kari Suominen, Senior Vice President, the situation is turbulent and demands more from both data and partners.

“Ensuring the continuity of society’s electricity supply in all circumstances requires constant development, new solutions, and the ability to foresee the future before others. In this development work, Digia has played a major role. As we have learned to better understand each other, it has become easier to bring the best expertise to support our strategic goals. At that point, the partnership is not just technical development – it is shared problem-solving in situations where success is essential.”

Data for the needs of a real-time energy market

When the design of Fingrid’s data platform began three years ago, the aim was a significant renewal. The old solution had reached the end of its lifecycle and no longer supported the growing demands of a real-time energy market. According to Teemu Hiekka, Product Owner of Data and Analytics Services, this was not merely a technical exercise – the entire operating model for data development was renewed at the same time.

“From the start, data development focused on four core principles: data freshness and reliability, speed and agility of development, ease of data utilisation, and clearly business-driven governance. Because the new platform receives data from a wide range of Fingrid’s systems, the renewal affected the whole organisation. Today, solutions are built faster, reports are of higher quality, and the business can leverage data in near real time.”

A new operating model benefiting the entire organisation

The new operating model for data development was gradually built and embedded in the organisation in phases. According to Hiekka, the change did not happen on its own: initially, only the units most ready for agile renewal were included in the pilots. However, positive experiences spread quickly, and interest grew throughout the organisation.

“Development is now closer to the business, and different units can steer the work based on their own needs. This results in better decisions and more impactful development. It is now well understood that in an organisation like Fingrid, data is not just stored information – it is a window into critical infrastructure and how the electricity system operates.”

Moving forward with a continuous improvement model

After implementing the new data platform, Fingrid and Digia have entered a continuous development phase. Future work is guided by AI-enabled forecasting models, growing data volumes across the energy sector, the ambition for agile development, and strengthening the operating model throughout the organisation. According to Suominen, artificial intelligence in particular will play a central role in both current and future growth.

Fingrid is a highly data-driven organisation. With significant growth in renewable electricity production and the strengthening of grid and connection capacity, investment in data-driven management is essential. And we are heading in the right direction. Recently, I praised our finance team for producing highly accurate reports that significantly support financial steering. I also extended the same praise to our technology experts, who have been responsible for developing the new data platform as a whole.”
