112 Suomi mobile app has safeguarded everyday life in Finland for ten years
Numerous emergencies in recent years have had happy endings, thanks to the 112 Suomi emergency location app, which speeds up the arrival of help. Launched in the summer of 2015, the app has evolved into a comprehensive platform for public authority services over the past ten years. Locating emergency calls and accelerating assistance remain the app’s core functions.
Where is the nearest defibrillator? Are there roadworks or disruptions affecting my commute? What’s the phone number for police advisory services or the national citizen helpline?
The 112 Suomi app, developed by the Emergency Response Centre Agency in partnership with Digia, answers these questions and more.
The goal of developing the 112 Suomi app is to provide citizens with access to a wide range of public authority services and announcements through a single application. The range of services has steadily expanded over the years, and continues to grow.
For several years, the app has also been used to distribute emergency alerts. Mobile location services enable these alerts to be delivered nationally or locally, depending on the situation.
On the phones of millions of users
The 112 Suomi app reached 1.7 million users in 2020, five years after its launch. The exact number of users has not been tracked since many people reinstall the app when changing phones.
However, download numbers are in the millions, and the app is on many Finnish phones.
“It’s amazing how well 112 Suomi has found its way onto people’s phones and into first aid and safety training by emergency services. You could say that Finns have truly embraced the app in ten years,” says Sami Suomalainen, application specialist at the Emergency Response Centre Agency.
The free app is available for download from the most common app stores.
