A new nationwide data platform provides consumers with information on primary food production

The joint Animal Welfare Verification System project of the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) and food business operators will create a science-based assessment system for verifying the welfare of production animals. The system and the ecosystem's shared national data platform will enable reliable consumer communication and promote more sustainable food production. The project's digital partner is the software and service company Digia.

In the national Animal Welfare Verification System project, companies working with the food industry and production animals are jointly developing a cattle welfare verification system, in which the assessment criteria are updated due to, for example, improvements in animal welfare, new research data or EU regulations. The aim is to make information in primary production more accessible to consumers.

"Current assessment methods cannot produce information on cattle welfare that meets consumer communications needs", says project leader Lilli Frondelius from Luke.

"Luke has worked with the food industry for a long time to develop cattle welfare and its assessment methods. This project is an excellent continuation of our long-term cooperation and, at the same time, brings new business partners into the ecosystem for developing sustainable livestock production", says Anu Kaukovirta, Luke's director.

Working for more sustainable food production and the future

Luke is coordinating the three-year project, part of Valio's Food 2.0 Veturi project. Business Finland is its main financier

In addition to Valio Ltd., the project's business partners include Atria Suomi Ltd, DeLaval Ltd, Animal Health ETT, Faba Coop, GS1 Finland Ltd. and HKFoods Finland Ltd.

The software and service company Digia acts as the project's digital partner and is mainly involved in developing an assessment system and a data platform integrated into the food industry ecosystem. These systems enable the transmission and processing of welfare data from primary production to different actors.

"We have long experience in digital business development for food companies. In addition, we can help our customers in a wide range of ways with data management and reporting needs due to various regulatory requirements for responsibility, as well as with the automation of data collection. We have promoted more sustainable food production in many different ways. It is great to continue this work as part of a national project and bring our expertise to benefit ecosystem operators and consumers", says Janne Tuominen, Digia's Senior Vice President.
