Responsible use of AI through an AI governance model and roadmap

Voimatel, specialising in designing, constructing, and maintaining critical digital infrastructure, takes a responsible approach to AI. An AI roadmap and governance model being developed with Digia will steer the company towards tangible benefits – and the first AI automation is already in place.

Read the summary (AI-generated, human-reviewed)

  • Voimatel is implementing its AI strategy in a sustainable and responsible way.
  • Together with Digia, the company developed an AI governance model and roadmap to guide controlled AI development.
  • The first practical AI application handles around 200 service requests and saves supervisors 40 hours of work each month.

Voimatel sees AI as a strategic opportunity. The company’s customers include operators, equipment manufacturers, and data centre providers requiring high-performance and secure connections to deliver their AI services. AI also enables Voimatel to improve internal productivity.

"AI plays a strong role in our strategy, but we want to approach it sustainably and responsibly. At this stage, we are exploring AI’s potential and assessing how the entire organisation can benefit from the technology as much as possible," says Head of Business Technology Arto Nyyssönen.

What we did

  • AI governance model
  • AI roadmap
  • AI automation

What we used

  • AI and data consulting
  • Digia Dolphin service concept
Digia has played an important role in designing the roadmap. They present technologies and their potential uses to us, which makes it easier to come up with use case ideas.

Critical infrastructure, deliberate AI steps

Voimatel operates within the realm of critical infrastructure, which requires exceptional care in all data-related decisions, including those involving artificial intelligence. The company follows a determined yet controlled approach to exploring AI opportunities and making related technical choices. Internally, Voimatel refers to this as responsible AI.

"In addition to regulatory compliance, it means that the perspective of responsibility is considered in every AI-related decision. For example, the language models we use are selected based on impact and environmental considerations, and all employees are offered opportunities to learn and use AI," says Nyyssönen.

Clear rules, space to Innovate

Voimatel’s controlled approach to AI development includes defining clear rules, responsibilities, and roles for developing and using artificial intelligence. At the same time, the company remains open to new ideas and emerging use cases. To align these goals, Digia joined Voimatel’s AI journey to co-develop an AI governance model and roadmap.

"Besides Digia’s AI expertise, they already have a solid understanding of our business and technological environment. That’s why it felt natural to start working on the governance model and roadmap together with them," says Nyyssönen.

The governance model ensures transparency, and the roadmap provides direction

The governance model guiding Voimatel’s AI development ensures that all AI applications and data usage within the company meet the required standards. It also clarifies how and where AI is utilised in Voimatel’s business operations.

The roadmap, on the other hand, is developed through cross-organisational collaboration. The aim is to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to benefit from AI and that its use is advanced in a unified way. Proposed use cases are evaluated and prioritised based on their impact.

"Digia has played an important role in designing the roadmap. They introduce us to technologies and their potential applications, which helps generate ideas for use cases. At the same time, they can also advise when a use case might be better implemented without AI. AI is not a goal for both parties," says Nyyssönen.

AI automation immediately saved 40 hours per month

Digia and Voimatel have also collaborated on practical AI implementations. One example is an AI automation developed by Digia for Voimatel, which interprets service requests received via email, converts them into a structured format, and feeds them into Voimatel’s integration platform—ultimately creating work orders for field technicians.

To support comprehensive AI adoption, Digia’s Dolphin service concept enables the automation of business processes using AI in a way that connects individual use cases into a coherent whole.

Digia's solution processes around 200 service requests and saves dispatchers approximately 40 monthly working hours. The investment paid for itself in just over six months.

"In the bigger picture, this may seem like a small thing, but one of the key principles of our AI strategy is that small streams lead to significant benefits. This brings us tangible and easily verifiable value, marking our first step towards AI automation," says Nyyssönen.

Artificial intelligence addresses the challenges of the future

Artificial intelligence plays a vital role in Voimatel’s future. Naturally, not all its possibilities are known, but the governance model and roadmap help ensure the journey is impactful and responsible. One key area will continue to be AI automations implemented with Digia's support.

“AI automations, and artificial intelligence in general, have an important role in our future. Due to retirements, the number of skilled telecommunications technicians will decrease significantly in the coming years, so improving productivity is essential. Digia’s Dolphin integrates well with our IT architecture, enabling us to implement a wide range of productivity-enhancing automations,” summarises Nyyssönen.
