Transparency and efficiency in port operations with a new ERP system

  • The new Digia Logistics Port Operations system brought significantly increased transparency to Outokumpu Shipping’s port operations, reduced manual work, and removed the dependency on Excel.

  • The solution integrated seamlessly into the Group’s broader IT transformation and enabled a unified, efficient operating model at the port – information now flows through the organization in real time.

  • Digia’s expertise, reliability, and strong integration capabilities were considered essential: the deployment went smoothly, cooperation was effortless, and support is quick to respond.

Outokumpu, the world’s leading producer of sustainable stainless steel, carried out a global IT harmonisation initiative, resulting in the renewal of a significant part of its business systems.

As part of this extensive programme, the organisation implemented the Digia Logistics Port Operations Management System, which now supports and steers the operational activities of Outokumpu Shipping.

What we delivered

  • A renewal of the enterprise resource planning system for the port operations, as part of the harmonization of the global IT solutions

Methodology used

  • Digia Logistics Port Operations system

Everything happens through the system, and everyone uses the same tool. Vessel agents see the same information as supervisors, and information no longer needs to be passed around via email or printed nearly as much.

Integrating port operations into the same IT system environment was seen as essential to bring processes, information flow, and transparency to the same level as the rest of the corporation. At the same time, the old system had reached the end of its lifecycle and no longer met new integration requirements.

The decision to work with Digia was made after the project team reviewed how the solution was used in another customer’s port operations.

“We examined other options as well, but Digia’s solution convinced us with its comprehensive capabilities. Our earlier experiences with Digia as a reliable partner also played a key role. Due to the harmonisation programme, we had a lot on our plate and wanted to be sure of our partner’s capabilities,” says Petri Miettinen, IT Project Manager at Outokumpu.

According to Päivi Tallgren, who served as the IT Project Business Lead at Outokumpu, the new solution now supports almost all functions of the port organisation. It is used to manage vessel calls, cargo and material flows in the port, as well as invoicing.

“Compared to the previous system, this is a true ERP solution. We now have visibility down to each individual steel coil, and the amount of manual work and printed documents has reduced significantly,” Tallgren says.

The system was taken into use at Outokumpu Shipping almost as-is, which simplified the deployment. Due to the large transformation programme, the number and importance of integrations were particularly high. According to Miettinen, Digia’s system and the team’s expertise supported this exceptionally well.

“With Digia’s support, we were ahead of the other programme areas in terms of integrations. The port organisation was already developing new capabilities while others were still getting started,” he explains.

More transparency, less manual work, and a unified operating model

The earlier solution had more limited functionality and often required separate Excel files to complement it. Now, more activities can be handled within the same system, and information flows efficiently across the entire organisation.

“Everything happens through the system, and everyone uses the same tool. Vessel agents see the same information as supervisors, and information no longer needs to be passed around via email or printed nearly as much,” Tallgren says.

Digia met expectations as a partner

Both Miettinen and Tallgren describe the collaboration with Digia as smooth. Digia’s experts were seen as skilled and the ways of working reliable: they knew their own product thoroughly, had strong integration expertise, and worked according to clear principles. The personal chemistry also worked well.

The system was taken into production in October 2025, and cooperation continues through support and small development services.

“The collaboration has worked extremely well – we have received help quickly, and issues have been resolved,” Tallgren says.
